Help Build the Port Armstrong Community Center

This project will involve constructing a 40’x14′ two story building at our Port Armstrong Hatchery facility. The bottom story will be divided into two equal parts, one half (20’x14′) a fully enclosed greenhouse and the other half (20’x14′) open sided, with a communal eating/lounging area including a barbeque, tables, sauna and other amenities. The top story will be an open concept apartment, available to our community members. We have tentatively secured a contractor to oversee the project and have additional staff to help in the building. This Community Center would help add so much value for our whole community, reaching not only our employees and their families but the processors that work so closely with us, high school and college programs that rely on our teachings, fishermen that frequent our area, community members of the surrounding areas, and many more.

Being a remote living and working destination, our employees and anyone in the area struggle with missing out on the creature comforts that most have grown accustomed to. It can be a relentless environment to live in, especially in the winter months. We have groceries shipped in weekly, but there can often be major weather delays, causing spoiled produce and limitations to what should realistically be ordered, and the transportation is expensive for anyone using this delivery option. Having a community garden, where healthy, fresh produce can be grown and shared year-round will be a substantial benefit to all those that visit and live at the hatchery. Quality food options will include a greater variety and be more readily available. Having an updated, inviting area where our community can share a meal or warm up in a sauna would improve the living conditions of the often wet, cold, and stormy environment that our community members call home, and bolster the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that we have been known for in the past. This garden and community area will expand the interactions we see between our community members, which is so important as the days get shorter and months get darker, and create something everyone can work together in.
